Relaxing your Eyes

Sit so your spine has all it's natural curves and place your hands in your lap.
Close your eyes and relax all the muscles on your face, especially those around your eyes.
Do nothing for about a minute as you bring your attention inward where it is quiet and dark.
Squeeze your eyes tight and then relax the tension, eyes still closed.
Do this 3 times.
Open your eyes and let them blink a few times.

You are now ready for some eyes exercises.

Stretching your Eyes

Envision a clock straight ahead of you on the wall.
Do not move your head when your eyes move in different directions.
Look up at 12 and then down to 6...Repeat 10 times.
Close your eyes briefly and take in a full breath and exhale with a deep sigh.
Look over to 9 and then over to 3...Repeat 10 times.
Close your eyes, rub your hands together briskly,
place your hands over your eyes, and relax.

Envision a square straight ahead of you on the wall.
Be sure that you are still sitting up straight.
Look up to the left corner and down to the right corner...Repeat 10 times.
Close your eyes briefly, inhale a full, deep breath, and exhale any tiredness from your eyes.
Look up to the right corner and down to the left corner...Repeat 10 times.
Close your eyes, rub your hands together briskly,
place your hands over your eyes, and relax.

Look at the clock again.
Don't move your body as you move your eyes.
Draw a full circle clockwise around the clock starting at 12 and ending at 12.
Now draw the circle counter clockwise starting and ending at 12.
Close your eyes, rub your hands together briskly,
place your hands over your eyes, and relax.

Don't be surprised if you feel a tingly or stinging sensation as you stretch your eyes.
This only means they are not used to being stretched in all directions.

Shifting Focus

Pick a point in the distance straight ahead of you and focus on it.
Extend your arm and place your thumb right underneath this point.
Look to the point, and look to your thumb.
Repeat 10 times.
Close your eyes, rub your hands together briskly,
place your hands over your eyes, and relax.

Focusing Up Close

Extend your arm straight out in front of you and look at the tip of your thumb.
Let your eyes follow your thumb as you draw it slowly toward the tip of your nose.
Follow your thumb as your arm stretches out in front of you again.
Repeat 10 times
Close your eyes, rub your hands together briskly, place your hands over your eyes, and relax.
Sit back in your chair for a moment, close your eyes
and do a few deep breaths before moving on.

Relaxation seems to be the single most important element of eye health,
so be sure to close your eyes and let them rest when they feel tired.
